Having this Simple Homemade Taco Seasoning around has been a game changer for me this summer. Taco meat made with this homemade seasoning creates a tasty filling that’s healthy, quick and best of all everyone loves it!
I’ve got a winning taco salad to share with you later, but first….this. In just a few minutes you can shake up a south of the border spice mix in your own kitchen that is much better for you than the store-bought packaged variety.
I keep a big batch of this dry spice mix and store it with my other spices to have ready for taco salad or taco lettuce cups switching out the tortillas for lettuce leaves. Have you seen Costco’s beautiful organic baby romaine? They keep well and stay fresh, making great lettuce wraps for tacos. You’ve got to give them a try.
And while we’re talking Costco, have you tried their ground bison? It’s delicious with this taco seasoning. I brown an entire 1.25 pound package of bison to 1 tablespoon of this seasoning, (see complete directions below in the recipe portion).
Or if you’re meal prepping, brown up a few pounds of taco meat, enough for a few meals, let cool and freeze in appropriate size ziplock for your family for future meals. Remove from freezer the night before, refrigerate and it’s ready to reheat for dinner.
Simple Homemade Taco Seasoning

2 teaspoons black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Combine all spices together in a small jar with a lid. For every pound of browned meat, add 1 tablespoon of seasoning, 1 tablespoon of tomato paste and 1/4 cup of water. Continue to cook for another 5 minutes after adding spices.
