DIY Outdoor Garden Colander

DIY Outdoor Garden Colander

I am so excited to share with you this new garden accessory!  This DIY Outdoor Garden Colander is the perfect companion to the DIY Outdoor Garden Sink and it is so simple, my husband made it in one afternoon!

This old friend needed replacing.   We’ve done some good work together, but it’s time to give it a rest.

This new tool replaces the above basket plus all of these colanders, which we used to dutifully drag outside, from the kitchen, to clean garden produce, then bring them back in.  Now we have one large, easy to use colander that does the job of many.  I’m one happy lady 🙂

After describing to the hubs what was needed, he made this wide and shallow box with a galvanized hardware cloth base.

I love that it’s wide enough when harvesting  a variety of veggies, it has enough space to keep them separate.  But it’s not so big that it’s bulky and hard to move with.

After cleaning garden produce in the outdoor garden sink, it’s shallow enough to allow for excellent drainage. He gave it some “legs” to help in the draining process as well. You don’t own an outdoor garden sink?  This can be helpful in rinsing your fresh veggies with the garden hose, leaving dirt and critters behind.

The dimensions are 21 x 26 x 51/2.  It’s light weight and easy to work with.  It’s already gotten plenty of use and I’m delighted that it’s going to save me a lot of time in the harvest to table process.

Here is his short materials list:

1 / 8 foot x 1 inch x 6 inch pine or cedar

21 x 26 inch 1/4 inch galvanized hardware cloth

Feel free to ask questions or make comments-

Happy gardening you all!

  1. Hello!
I was interested in making the colander but I didn’t see any instructions via your blog. Did you have instructions on how this can be made (by an inexperienced builder I might add. 😉).
    Thank you,
    Holly Johnson
